Our Academics

In addition to our primary duty of guiding students through  their schooling career, we are dedicated to fostering a culture of diligence, capability, self-motivation, and collaboration among all our students. We encourage the development of a broad range of skills, from comprehensive reading and accurate research to effective communication. Vineridge House students are defined by their eagerness for learning, their ability to seize opportunities beyond the standard curriculum, their capacity for creative thinking, and their dedication to hard work. They understand that achievement is not solely derived from inherent talent, but equally from unwavering effort and dedication.

Our comprehensive and balanced academic curriculum mirrors this goal, placing a strong emphasis on nurturing independent, innovative thought grounded in practical knowledge and conceptual comprehension. Our learning environment, while secure, also offers challenges that stimulate participation, curiosity, and inquiry. This educational philosophy is ingrained from the earliest years in our pre prep  culminating in our college phase. In college, we continue to embed learning at the heart of our classroom practices.

Through a diverse array of extra-curricular pursuits, we empower students to evolve into confident, respectful, and responsible individuals who are prepared to tackle the complexities of the world.

Pre Preparatory and Junior Preparatory

In our pre preparatory and Junior Preparatory school, we are dedicated to nurturing the happiness, confidence, and competence of young children. We foster self-esteem, which serves as a catalyst for spontaneous and exploratory learning, school readiness, and cognitive development—particularly in areas such as reading and mathematics. Our educational approach is student-centred, highlighting the unique attributes of each student. This personalised focus encourages each student to attain their full potential while addressing their individual needs and talents. We cultivate kindness, consideration, love, and respect among our students, fostering good life skills and a sense of camaraderie.

Our approach recognizes that a relaxed and enjoyable environment supports students in navigating the academic, physical, social, and emotional demands of school. Our passionate educators prioritise language and pre-reading skills alongside cognitive, physical, and emotional development through purposeful play activities.

Grade 1 classes commence with a 6-week Orientation Programme at the start of the first term, introducing students to subjects like Mathematics, Phonics, and Reading. In Grades 2 and 3, students build upon well-established skills.

We hold reading in high esteem, employing three different reading schemes. Students are also motivated to engage in extended reading activities. Excursions, an integral part of learning, are organised for our students at least once a term.

Our holistic approach provides every child with opportunities to unfold their potential. Students participate in sports, art, and cultural events, honing skills, shaping character, and imbed life lessons. We also offer on-premises aftercare facilities, detailed information for which can be found under Vineridge House Aftercare.

In Grade 7. The curriculum offered in this phase comprises English as the language of instruction (English Home Language), the first additional languages being Afrikaans or isiZulu, Mathematics, Life Orientation, Creative Arts, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Technology, and Economic and Management Science.

Our commitment lies in furnishing students with a robust foundation in core subjects, while concurrently nurturing their critical thinking, logical reasoning, and practical research skills. Many of our classrooms are equipped with computers and interactive whiteboards, effectively bringing a wealth of information into the learning space. Additionally, we boast well-equipped science laboratories.

The College

Our academic divisions are classified into General Education and Training (Grades 7, 8 and 9) and Further Education and Training (Grades 10 to 12).

The IEB examination is introduced in Grade 10, culminating in students receiving the IEB National Senior Certificate upon graduation in  Grade 12.

Vineridge House’s College curriculum is designed to equip students with the skills imperative for life beyond the classroom. Our academic emphasis is placed on nurturing vital 21st-century skills encompassing creativity, innovation, critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, teamwork, character development, and integrity. While subject content remains significant, we actively stimulate curiosity through inquiry-based learning, facilitated by an innovative and progressive curriculum.

We firmly believe in extending the boundaries of teaching beyond the curriculum and classroom. Thus, students are exposed to diverse opportunities for development and learning through excursions and tours.

Vineridge House intentionally cultivates “critical and creative thinking” and “problem-solving” skills. These skills are deliberately woven into regular assessments, enabling students to enhance their cognitive abilities. Every assessment task includes a predetermined percentage of questions aimed at honing these skills, exposing students to novel challenges.

While the pursuit of personal academic excellence is paramount, we also acknowledge that the notion of excellence may vary for each student. To this end, Vineridge House provides additional professional support. Our educators are available for extra assistance beyond regular academic schedules. Daily mathematics support classes are offered, and support classes for other subjects are tailored to meet individual students’ needs.
